Course Description:
This course is designed to help you continue to develop an appreciation of written
and spoken language. We will use oral language, written language, and technology
for expressive, argumentative, critical, and literary purposes. We will read a
variety of literature including short stories, plays, poetry, essays, and
novels. Writing assignments will include journals, essays, critiques, and
creative works. Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar will be a vital part of this
class.
Grading Policy:
In this class, you will be graded both informally and formally, using several
different types of assessments. These can include rubrics, tests, quizzes, and
projects. The grading system in this class is based on the following
percentages:
Homework: 15%
Quizzes: 15%
Projects/Writing: 20%
Classwork: 25%
Tests: 25%
GradingScale:
This class adheres to Inman Middle School’s grading scale:
A 90-100% Excellent
B 80-89% Above Average
C 79-75% Average
C- 74-70% Below Average
F 0-69% Failure to achieve
NE No Evaluation
Assignments:
All assignments must be submitted by the given due date and are due at the
beginning of the class period. All homework is due the next day unless
otherwise stated. You may not leave class to retrieve homework, projects, or
other assignments unless an emergency pass is used.
Cheating/Plagiarism:
Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic
grade of zero. This includes copying homework, classwork, test answers, talking
during a test or quiz, allowing someone to copy your work, and trying to pass
off someone else’s work as your own.
Late Assignments/Missed Work:
Any assignments not received on or before the due date are considered late. It is
the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher regarding any late/missed
assignments and their due date. Late writing assignments, projects or other
major assignments will receive a 25 point deduction. Only
late work for the current quarter will be accepted.
Emergency Passes:
You are expected to use the designated times for locker and restroom breaks.
At the teacher’s discretion, you may be allowed to use an emergency pass when
necessary.

Listen to and follow all instructions.
Excellence only: come prepared to learn.
Stay seated unless you have permission to move around the room.

1st Offense: Warning / Student Conference
2nd Offense: Parent Contact
3rd Offense: One (1) hour after school detention
4th Offense: Two (2) hour after school detention (served 2 consecutive days)
5th Offense: Referral to Administration
SERIOUS OFFENSE: Automatic Administrative Referral
